XO Communications Research Reveals that 56 Percent of Businesses Worry About Cloud Data Security

HERNDON, Va. – March 17, 2016 – Fifty-six percent of businesses are concerned that security gaps at the connection point between their Wide Area Network (WAN) and public cloud service providers may compromise their data used in the cloud, according to a recent XO Communications-commissioned study.

XO Communications (XO) commissioned IDG to conduct research regarding business concerns about the security and visibility of wide area network (WAN) connection points with the public cloud.  The survey respondents were employees at organizations that plan to connect their WAN to a public cloud services provider.  The results were published in a whitepaper entitled Where Cloud Meets WAN.

Security gaps put companies at risk of data breaches that can cost organizations millions of dollars.  In fact, according to an IBM-sponsored study published by Ponemon Institute titled 2015 Cost of Data Breach Study; Global Analysis, data breaches cost organizations an average of $6.5 million per incident in the United States.

Visibility and management of the connection between the WAN and the public cloud provider is a growing challenge that many IT departments are now facing.  According to the XO study, only thirty-eight percent of respondents have excellent or very good visibility into their WAN cloud connection points.  This lack of visibility has led many organizations to deploy or investigate a solution to protect network traffic.

“The economic advantages of leveraging public cloud services are crystal clear,” said Jake Heinz, senior vice president of marketing and product at XO Communications.  “Public cloud services enable businesses to compete in their industry sector with increased agility and scalability to meet specific customer demands.  Companies employing a network-enabled cloud solution enjoy security inherent in the XO MPLS IP-VPN service.  XO reduces security risks noted in the report through direct connections from our MPLS IP-VPN network to major cloud-based services and applications.”

XO MPLS IP-VPN is an application-aware, private, WAN solution for IP data transport between business locations.  The secure XO MPLS IP-VPN network offering enables IT managers to run mission-critical services such as VoIP, video and business applications while maximizing performance, reducing operating costs and streamlining network management.  XO recently was recognized by TMC with a 2015 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award for its MPLS IP-VPN.
