XO Launches Broadband Services in Baltimore
Revolutionizes the Way Businesses Buy and Use Communications Services
BALTIMORE, MD - XO Communications (Nasdaq:XOXO), one of the world’s fastest growing providers of broadband communications services, today announced its introduction of commercial broadband communications services in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area. With the launch of services in Baltimore, XO now serves 54 markets across the country.
XO provides businesses with a wide range of broadband communications services including Internet access, e-mail, Web hosting and e-commerce capabilities as well as local and long distance voice services. The Company also offers virtual private networks (VPN’s) and global transit and application infrastructure services for delivering applications over the Internet or a VPN.
“Baltimore businesses need a broadband communications company that stands for simplicity, reliability and convenience,” said XO Vice President and General Manager for Baltimore Dominick Vietri. “XO satisfies this need as an established telecommunications provider offering a range of services designed to meet a vast customer base. Whether it’s a small or medium size business interested in a bundled offering of voice and Internet services, or a large enterprise searching for increased bandwidth via Gigabit Ethernet -- we have the answer.”
XO brings single source accountability, extensive network capacity and reliability and 24x7 person-to-person customer service.
Last Fall, XO introduced XOptions™, a set of revolutionary service combinations in the United States for small and medium-sized businesses. The XO industry-changing offerings are a group of integrated and predictable flat-rate communications packages that include local, long distance, Internet Access and Web hosting (including e-mail and domain registration) services designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses.
“As of today we have changed the way Baltimore businesses have historically viewed and purchased telecommunications services by eliminating the distinction between voice and data communications while ridding of the term ‘long distance.’” said Vietri. “By packaging these benefits together we give customers something that is rare from a communications provider – freedom from worry about services in exchange for time to focus on their core business.”
At the same time, XO also launched its Gigabit Ethernet offering (GigE) with Internet giant Yahoo! as its first customer. Designed to connect customers' local area networks (LANs) within a metropolitan area, XO’s suite of Ethernet services leverages the company’s extensive metro fiber assets and transmits data to Ethernet connections at speeds of up to 1 Gbps – never before possible for Ethernet connections.
“The network investment that XO has made in Baltimore provides us with a large footprint in which we can provide service,“ said Nate Davis , president and chief operating officer of XO. “We look forward to introducing Baltimore to the future of telecommunications.”
XO is constructing an extensive underground fiber optic network serving Baltimore and the surrounding Washington D.C./Northern Virginia corridor. Within the next 12 months, the locally operated network will be connected to more than 60 other XO local networks in the United States via XO’s 16,000-mile, IP-centric long-haul fiber network. Baltimore will also begin deploying services from its high-capacity broadband wireless assets by the end of this year to bring added diversity, bandwidth and reliability to customers.
